What is EVC?
An EVC system covers a variety of functions, mainly for
An EVC (emergency voice communication) system allows firefighters
and others to communicate with one another during emergency situations.
The system also allows communication with disabled persons.
It is a “System that allows voice communication in either direction
between a central control point and a number of other points throughout
a building or building complex, particularly in a fire emergency situation.” (BS5839-9:2011 3.4).
An EVC System is a:
- Disabled refuge system (DRS) – (TYPE B outstation)
- Fire telephone system – (TYPE A outstation)
- Emergency / steward telephone system – (TYPE A outstation)
- Roaming telephone system
Why is EVC needed?
- For conformance with national standards and building codes
- To communicate with ‘emergency personnel’ within a building, to ensure a controlled evacuation
- To communicate with ALL occupants within a building, to assist and reassure throughout an emergency
- To communicate with occupants of ‘refuge areas’
An EVC System is intended for use by:
- Management of the building or complex, for the initial evacuation
- The fire service during an evacuation
- The fire service after an evacuation
- Disabled / physically impaired people
